Warm, soft and dotted with dark chocolate, this Chocolate Bread & Butter Pudding turns buttered bread and a simple custard into a comforting baked treat. Children practise spreading butter smoothly and evenly over each slice with a table knife before layering it up and soaking it in custard. It's a delicious lesson in minimising waste, too – a classic way to give slightly stale bread a second life rather than throwing it away.

Ingredients
butter 50 g
white bread 4 slice
egg 2
whole milk 300 ml
caster sugar 40 g
dark chocolate chips 25 g
Method
Preheat the oven & prep the bread
Preheat the oven to 180°C.
Spread the butter evenly over the four slices of bread using a table knife.
Cut the slices diagonally into triangular quarters.
Layer four triangles of bread into each foil container buttered side up, then sprinkle a few chocolate chips over each.
Layer another 4 triangles over each foil container and sprinkle over the remaining chocolate chips.
Make the custard
Crack the eggs into a small bowl and whisk with a fork.
Pour the beaten eggs into the milk in a jug then add the caster sugar and mix well with the fork.
Add the custard & bake
Put the foil dishes on a tray and carefully pour the custard mix evenly over the two containers of buttered bread.
Use the back of a fork to gently press the bread into the custard.
Put the puddings into the oven and cook for about 15-20 mins, or until the custard is set and the top is brown and crusty.
